Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD)

Do you have jaw pain, tightness, ear fullness, popping, and clicking in the jaw?

All these symptoms can be caused by Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction or TMJD.

•This is a diagnosis that is commonly accompanied by cervical dysfunction.

•The neck musculature and mechanics of movement in the neck are directly related to movement of the jaw and vise versa. If one area is affected by dysfunction, it’s very likely that the other will compensate for the poor movement patterns of the other.

•When addressing jaw pain it is imperative that the cervical spine is also assessed and treated to make sure both systems are working together properly.

Many people who have TMJD:

•Grind their teeth at night

•Hold their jaw in a tightened position throughout the day, and can have discomfort with chewing.

Most people that have these issues usually consult with their dentist about what to do, but what about physical therapy?

TMJD can be assessed and treated by a Physical Therapist in conjunction with dentistry!

Some people with TMJD need protection on their teeth due to the intense grinding while sleeping - this is where the expertise of a dentist comes into play.

Treatment of TMJD is an interdisciplinary team approach and will have a higher likelihood of a positive outcome for patients.
